What is Graston Technique?

Graston Technique® (GT) is an instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization technique that effectively treats acute, chronic, and/or post-surgical soft tissue conditions. GT utilizes specifically designed stainless steel instruments with unique edges and angles, along with cross fiber massage to identify, stretch, and break up areas of scar tissue and fascial restriction, restoring pain free movement and function. Graston Technique has been used as a protocol for more than 25 years, the concept is grounded in the works of Dr. James Cyriax, a British Orthopedic Surgeon.

Evidence Shows GT Provides the Following Physiological Effects:

  • Breaks down scar tissue and lengthens muscle fibers and connective tissue
  • Relaxes contracted muscles, reducing pain
  • Boosts nutrient filled blood supply to the area
  • Increases cell activity in the area, for rapid healing
  • Optimizes productivity of mast cells, which aid wound healing and defend against bacteria
  • Induces histamine production, accelerating wound healing

Why is Scar Tissue a Problem?

Scar tissue forms when the body heals from repetitive trauma or an injury. When tissue is damaged, it will often heal in a fibrotic, haphazard manner. Unlike normal tissue, scar tissue shows thickening, irregular organization, and lacks elasticity causing restriction, limited range of motion, functional limitations, weakness, pain and discomfort. It can also result in adhesions, impaired blood flow, nerve entrapment, and muscle tension.

Conditions Treated With Graston

Graston can be used to treat any soft tissue movement restriction. Here is a list of some of the most common conditions treated with Graston:

  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Sprains & Strains
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Shin Splints
  • Hip Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Trigger Finger

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Hamstring Injuries
  • Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Scar Tissue/Post Surgical Scars

Is Graston Treatment Painful?

You may experience some minimal discomfort during your first few sessions with mild bruising. This is a normal response to the healing process.

What is the Frequency of Treatment?

Patients usually receive two treatments per week over the course of 4 to 5 weeks. Most patients see results by the 3rd or 4th session.
